A private helicopter carries you beyond the last track, deep into the rapids and forests of French Guiana — eleven days spent following the current, guided by Amerindian tradition, in search of the elusive aimara.
01 — Arrival by Air
Touching down at Saut Pierkourou, deep in the rainforest, camp is raised at the water’s edge. By evening, the first cast is already in the rapids — the aimara rising beneath a darkening sky, the first of many nights spent fishing by torchlight.
02 — Through the Rapids
The days drift past Saut Nana and Saut-Maripa, kayaks portaged where the river demands it, camp rising wherever the light begins to fade. By night, the forest reveals itself — caiman eyes catching torchlight, the distant call of a jaguar carried across the water.
03 — Traditional Waters
Guided by Amerindian tradition, the days are spent reading the river as generations have before — by spear, by patience, by an intimacy with the water that cannot be rushed. Some nights end by firelight; others in the hush of a nocturnal cast beneath the stars.
04 — Saut-Tampok
The river narrows toward Saut-Tampok, where camp is made on a small island in the midst of the rapids. Days blur into long, unhurried sessions on the water — the largest catches of the journey often arriving after dark, when the rapids fall quiet and the fish begin to rise.
05 — The Village of Cayodé
The expedition’s final waters carry you to Cayodé, an Amerindian village few travellers ever reach. The catch is shared in a feast prepared for the whole community, hosted by the village’s own captain — a celebration that lingers long after the fire has died down.
